IIEE Attends the 5th Anniversary of Concept2Venture

On December 16th, IIEE attended the 5th anniversary of the Concept2Venture Business Plan Competition, also known as "C2V".  At the competition, graduate and undergraduate students from all University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) colleges compete for $17,000 in cash prizes, plus a wide array of in-kind business services.  This all-day event brings together numerous high profile members of the Chicago business community.

In the first four years of C2V, 40 teams made it to the semi-finals.  Of those, 11 have launched companies that have enjoyed considerable success.  Representing UIC, they won 82 prizes in regional, national and internatonal business plan competitions, beating teams from the most prestigious universities in the world.  More than 250 news reports about them were featured in media including the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Examiner and Chicago Public Radio.

IIEE Participates in 5th Annual Financial Literacy Conference

Every year Illinois Jumpstart presents its annual Financial Literacy Conference. On November 3rd, IIEE attended this conference where K-12 teachers and Financial Literacy Practitioners are taught how to teach personal finance concepts through various methods and activities.

Some of the workshops presented were:  "Using Childeren's Literature to Teach Finance" and "Money Savvy Kids Basic Finance Curriculum" for grades K-5; "Become A Money Master: Financial Education Curriculum for Middle School Students" and "Pillars of Success:  Financial Literacy, Workforce Readiness and

Entrepreneurship" for grades 6-8 and "Stock Market Game: A Fun Way to Learn a Serious Teaching Tool" and "Your Future Counts" for grades 9-12.  Many attendees were able to receive materials in order to help them succeed in teaching financial literacy to their students.

IIEE's Summer Interns

For the last two years, IIEE has participated in CPS' "Youth Ready Chicago" program.  This year was no exception and we welcomed two wonderful interns:  Odette Franco, a Senior from Lane Tech High School and Gilma Garcia, a Senior from Lake View High School.

Odette plans to study accounting and computer science and hopes to attend either Aurora University or Lewis University.  Gilma is also interested in accounting, but looks forward to being an entrepreneur, owning her own pastry shop.

Both young ladies expressed how much they learned about the everyday tasks that take place in an office, as well as how they enjoyed accompanying IIEE to other events, such as a post-conference focus group and a National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Conference.  Odette said "This internship has affirmed that I want to work in an office environment."  Gilma felt working at IIEE enhanced her communication and organization skills.  She said "I have been taught so much and I'm taking everything I learned and applying it to everyday life."

The IIEE staff was helped tremendously by these two young ladies, as they worked very hard at organizing our various files, handling inventory for office supplies, typing documents and adding information to our database.  Both Odette and Gilma were hard-working, detail-oriented and friendly young ladies who always showed up with a smile and ready to work.  IIEE wishes them the best of luck in all of their future endeavors!
